How the flooring calculator works
Getting the right amount of flooring is simple with this method:
- Find the floor area. Multiply length × width for a rectangle, or enter the area directly for L-shaped and irregular rooms.
- Multiply by the number of rooms you're flooring identically.
- Add waste. 10% covers cuts, trimming, and mistakes — use more for tile or diagonal layouts.
- Divide by box coverage. Check the "sq ft per box" on the flooring label. We round box counts up.
Buying a box or two extra is almost always a good idea: it lets you replace a damaged plank later, and most retailers accept returns of unopened boxes.

- Check the actual box coverage. Brands differ — the number is printed on every box. Use it instead of guessing.
- Order one batch. Dye lots vary; mixing boxes from different lots can show subtle color differences.
- Acclimate first. Store hardwood and laminate in the room for 48 hours before installing.
- Keep 2–3 extra planks for future repairs — flooring lines get discontinued.

A 10x12 room is 120 sq ft. With 10% waste that's 132 sq ft. At 22 sq ft per laminate box, you need 6 boxes.
Do I need underlayment under laminate or vinyl flooring?
Many laminate and vinyl products come with an attached pad, but some require separate underlayment for moisture and soundproofing. Rolls typically cover about 100 sq ft. Check the manufacturer's instructions.
How many square feet is a square yard?
One square yard equals 9 square feet. Carpet is sold by the square yard; hardwood, laminate, and tile are sold by the square foot or by the box.
